Types of vegetarian diets
Vegetarian diets can be classified into three types:
- Vegan diets, which exclude meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products and foods containing these products.
- Lacto-vegetarian diet, which excludes meat, fish, poultry and eggs and foods containing them, allowing dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt and butter.
- Lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, which excludes meat, fish and poultry, allowing the eggs and dairy products.
However, some people follow a semi-vegetarian diet (flexitarian) which is primarily a plant-based diet, but it includes meat, dairy, eggs, chicken and fish occasionally or in small quantities.
